Timeline

Becoming a refugee doesn’t happen in one day as a tourist comfortably travels across countries in few hours.
A migrant forced to leave the home country often goes
through several months of a dangerous journey before reaching the destination – luggage and safety not included!

When the migrant arrives to the safe host country like Denmark, a different kind of a journey begins – a journey
to a refugee status. Many steps are on the way to build
the new life and new home.

Camps

The first steps in Denmark start in a refugee camp. Migrants apply for the status of a refugee. Immigration interview and loads of legal papers becomes the main activity. The rest is about waiting.
A refugee camp is a temporary basic accommodation.
Often migrants are lonely and separated from their family
that couldn’t take the dangerous journey. At this stage nothing is a guarantee and many of the questions remain unanswered. Most migrants experience moving to few more camps before they get a reply about their status.

Red Cross is among the main organizations helping the migrants at this stage.

Temporary accommodation

If the permission to stay in Denmark has been approved,
the refugee is directed to a temporary accommodation
in the municipality she or he has to stay in for minimum
3 years.
Even something as simple as Internet subscription or
bus schedule system that is easy for the locals to figure out,
can be a great challenge for others. A refugee that wants
to integrate and adapt to the new situation might need
a little help from a neighbor like you.
The biggest part of the everyday goes to many legal applications and search for a permanent accommodation. Some of the main needs are therefore translation, legal advice and a local city guide.

Hand in hand with the Municipality, Dansk Flygtningehjælp is one of the main organizations helping refugees that already arrived to a specific municipality, for example Aarhus.

Home

A refugee arriving to a municipality starts in a temporary accommodation that is either a hotel room or a flat. When the refugee finds a permanent home the final stage of the journey is reached. The time period in which this happens is very individual.
Let us not forget that even after moving to the final accommodation, the refugee is still new in Denmark and only begins to know you and your city. At this point the main priorities are to find a job and get the local network to truly build a home.

As in the prior stage, Dansk Flygtningehjælp and Municipality are great contributors.
There is still a lot to do if you want to join!
